Ampeg Portaflex In the late s Jess Oliver invented a combo amplifier with a chassis that could be inverted and tucked inside the speaker enclosure to protect the vacuum tubes. This combo bass amp was introduced in as the Portaflex , and remained a popular choice through the s. Characteristics[ edit ] A particular characteristic of Ampeg amplifiers in the s is that they were designed to be used for jazz and other types of music where distortion was not sought after — as Everett Hull had a major contempt for rock and roll music, and his hope that it being merely a “passing fancy” never materializing, had merely manifested his dismissive attitude towards the genre. The closest they came to a rock’n roll endorser at one point, was by way of Joe Long , a left-handed bass player of the Four Seasons , who played the company’s Horizontal Bass. This was further compounded by the one chief competitor Hull disliked the most; Fender , as they continually bested Ampeg in overall sales. Hull would grudgingly acknowledge rock’n roll music, via advertising copy for Ampeg’s “Supercombo” bass amp, introduced in

One of five children, Wyman spent most of his early life living in a terraced house in one of the roughest streets in Penge , southeast London. He describes his childhood as “scarred by poverty”. He created a fretless electric bass guitar by filing down or removing the frets on a cheap UK-built Dallas Tuxedo bass and played this in a south London band, the Cliftons, in He used the stage name Lee Wyman later Bill Wyman , taking the surname of a friend with whom he had done national service in the Royal Air Force from to The Rolling Stones Wyman touring in with the Rolling Stones When drummer Tony Chapman told him that a rhythm and blues band called the Rolling Stones needed a bass player, he auditioned and was hired on 7 December as a successor to Dick Taylor.

Ampegs can be divided into six distinct groups for dating purposes: Each group uses a unique serialization scheme that can be used to assist in dating the amps, but in many cases, it is the features and characteristics of the amps that determine the year of manufacture.
Electronic Industries Association EIA codes can also be very useful for giving clues as to an amp’s age. These codes can be found on speakers, transformers, pots, capacitors, and multi-section electrolytic “can” caps. Of course, these codes are only applicable to original components, not replacement parts. Ampeg amplifiers, especially the high-powered amps such as the SVT and V-series, contain lethal voltages even when unplugged and turned off.

A Fender Vibralux twin, and a Ross 40w, both with 12″ loudspeakers As said, guitar amplifiers are manufactured in two main forms. The “combination” or “combo” amplifier contains the amplifier head and guitar speakers in a single unit which is typically housed in a rectangular wooden box. The amplifier head or “amp head” contains the electronic circuitry constituting the preamp, built-in effects processing, and the power amplifier.
Other jacks may also be provided, such as an additional input jack, “send” and “return” jacks to create an effects loop for connecting electronic effects such as compression, reverb, etc. Kustom bass amp – amp head and speakers, watts RMS, two channels, two 15″ speakers, Some amplifiers have a line out jack for connecting the amplifier’s signal to a PA system or recording console or to connect the amplifier to another guitar amp.
Players use the line out to connect one guitar amplifier to another amplifier in order to create different tone colors or sound effects. However, in most styles of rock and blues guitar the line out is not used to connect the guitar amp to a PA system or recording console because the tonal coloration and overdrive from the amplifier and speaker is considered an important part of the amplifier’s sound. In the “amp head” form, the amplifier head is separate from the speakers, and joined to them by speaker cables.
The separate amplifier is called an amplifier head, and is commonly placed on top of one or more loudspeaker enclosures. A separate amplifier head placed atop a guitar speaker enclosure or guitar speaker cabinet forms an amplifier “stack” or “amp stack”.

Brand,Price,Category Clear All Refinements As long as the bass guitar has been a part of the music scene, bassists have been demanding a lot out of their amplifiers. That’s because they have to – the low-end tones of the bass need serious amplification to punch through the rest of the band and achieve the perfect impact on the audience. Biography[ edit ] Van Leeuwen has a Dutch surname he has ancestors from the Netherlands and has described himself as a third-generation American. His first big influence in learning how to play rock came through listening to Led Zeppelin records. Playing drums initially, Van Leeuwen sought to imitate Zeppelin drummer, John Bonham , but later switched to guitar and discovered that he had an aptitude for it. He cites Jimmy Page as a big influence: I would have to say that Jimmy Page was the first influence I had as a guitar player.
There were so many textures and different sounds that he got. The riffs that he made were undeniably great. Every one of them. Even the mistakes he made were great. So to me, that was a great first influence.
This is one of the most frustrating questions from the MIJ collector. People often make the mistake of citing the American or European importer as the ‘maker’ of the guitar, when in fact several Japanese manufacturers were producing badged guitars out of their plants and shipping them to America and Europe to sell. Japanese manufacturers made multiple badges at the same plant, many of whom resemble each other closely. Some manufacturers merged or changed hands over the years which added to the confusion, sometime merging with another maker, only to pick up their name later.
In some cases a manufacturer would farm out production to various manufacturers, making it still more difficult to know who made the guitar in your hands.
Valve technicians – by locality The following valve amp technicians have asked to be included in this listing, so inclusion here is not an endorsement.. Feedback on experiences with the work of techs on your amplifier is invited.
If you’re not familiar with my site, it’s simple, and you’ll love it or hate it: It’s not a fancy site but it remains unchanged since ’98 so I figure, “if it ain’t broke – don’t fix it. These guitars already have a great vintage vibe with an authentic looking two-tone sunburst gloss finish, parchment parts, and tinted neck, so the vintage logo is icing on the cake. Other features include C-shaped maple neck with maple fingerboard and modern 9. Like the early vintage models this guitar also has stacked knobs with a volume and tone on each pot. The tone pots are the click type, rather than a smooth taper; nice touch.
It might seem odd to have a Jaguar logo but we wanted to have a little fun with it and the two models are very close in styling, especially on these Vintage Modified models. We also did a Jaguar with a Jazzmaster logo! The logo job is perfect with several coats of nitro finish, wet sanding between coats, built up to be as thick as the logo so the outline isn’t visible pic here. Suffice it to say it definitely looks like a regular factory logo.

Permalink. As Dan said, the amp above is whats known by amp guys as the ’94 twin’, infact Fender used to call it that aswell. It was part of the pro range designed by Paul Rivera before he did his own thing.
The first Fender solidbody model, the Esquire , lasted in name only from June to October This model name was replaced by the “Broadcaster”, which lasted in name only from the October to January All Broadcasters have truss rods, where many Esquires often have no truss rod. In Gretsch had trademarked the name “BroadKaster” for a line of drums. After advertising the Broadcaster in music trade papers in February 20, , Gretsch took notice and sent Fender a telegram asking them to change their name.
Therefore Fender was forced to drop the name Broadcaster. Starting around February 22, , Fender cut the word “Broadcaster” off of their headstock decals. These models February to summer are known as “NoCasters”. Starting in the summer of , Fender adopted the name “Telecaster” for this model, and started using new decals after all the old clipped decals were used. Decal attachment was the last assembly step, so NoCasters with a February neck date are seen. Note that the above dates are accurate for the Esquire, Broadcaster and Nocaster.
